Erivo also obtained a second nod with the same film, in the original song category. Also selected in the best actress category are Cynthia Arivo (Harriet), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) and Charlize Theron (Bombshell). Ever Academy Award nomination list has its set of snubs, and Little Women director Greta Gerwig was one.
Oh, how naive I was going into this awards season with hope - truly a unsafe thing to have when you're a lifelong Oscar geek desperate for a reason to defend an institution that has been increasingly indefensible as of late.

But by adding about 3,000 new members in recent years - many of them young, female and/or people of colour - it has shaken up the old white males who used to rule the roost, and further changes are in store.
Instead "Joker" will prompt the popping of champagne corks next month, when it wins at least a few of its categories, among them Best Actor.
