Oscar nominations 2020: Facts and figures

14 January 2020

The nominations for this year's Academy Awards were announced this morning and, like usual, Black and brown folks were snubbed. Erivo also obtained a second nod with the same film, in the original song category. Also selected in the best actress category are Cynthia Arivo (Harriet), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) and Charlize Theron (Bombshell). Ever Academy Award nomination list has its set of snubs, and Little Women director Greta Gerwig was one.

Oh, how naive I was going into this awards season with hope - truly a unsafe thing to have when you're a lifelong Oscar geek desperate for a reason to defend an institution that has been increasingly indefensible as of late.

South Korean class satire "Parasite", from Bong Joon-ho, secured the final best director slot, meaning once again no women made the shortlist.

In the history of the Oscars, only five women have ever been nominated for best director - including Gerwig, for 2017's "Lady Bird". Another leading comedy actor-turned-awards contender was Adam Sandler - whose performance as the gambling wild-card in Uncut Gems is hugely impressive yet went completely unrewarded.

Last week, the British Film Academy was criticized for its nominations' lack of diversity; all best picture contenders were directed by men and not a single person of color was among the nominated actors.

"That's only going to happen when we have more and more women in the positions of power". Who are the sizeable percentage of the Academy's director's branch who thought Todd Phillips deserved to join a club that's been denied to all but five women in 92 years?

The Academy can't control how its 9,000-odd members cast their ballots, as much as it may wish it could. But by adding about 3,000 new members in recent years - many of them young, female and/or people of colour - it has shaken up the old white males who used to rule the roost, and further changes are in store.

Instead "Joker" will prompt the popping of champagne corks next month, when it wins at least a few of its categories, among them Best Actor.

The noms will be rolled out in two parts, beginning at 5:18 PT with the following nine categories (in no particular order): Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Costume Design, Film Editing, Original Score, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.
