Plex's Ad-Supported Free Video on Demand Feature Now Available Worldwide

04 December 2019

The service is supported by ads, so it works a lot like the video-on-demand services you'd get through a cable or satellite provider, only in this case you don't need a subscription to anything.

Plex's free content offerings span movies, TV shows, and music documentaries, but it also serves up content that's a little less mainstream such as extreme sports films and Bollywood musicals. There's no paid subscriptions, and it features content from major studios including Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), Lionsgate, Legendary and, of course, Warner Bros.

Current movie titles featured include Lord of War, Rain Man, Raging Bull, The Terminator, and Apocalypse Now, with more to be added.

The good news is that Plex isn't about to begin injecting ads into your personal media collection - those will stay within the bounds of the free movies and TV shows offered through this streaming service.

After downloading Plex, users will find the new content right on the Home screen, though existing Plex users who prefer to prioritize their own content can remove the free content. "What started more than a decade ago as a passion project to make accessing media on connected devices easier has evolved into the most comprehensive streaming platform in the industry, used by millions of people around the world".

Unlike other streaming services that rely on a monthly subscriber fee for funding, Plex's revenue will be driven by ads.

Plex isn't the first to dole out such an offering - Crackle, Pluto TV and The Roku Channel are just a few of the many similar services that immediately come to mind - but it is a welcome addition nevertheless.

Plex's free media can be played on nearly all platforms, including Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad, along with Roku, smart TVs, Android devices, and consoles.
