Jeetan Patel appointed England's spin bowling consultant

04 December 2019

The former New Zealand spinner was a part of the England coaching setup in their recent T20I series against New Zealand.

Saqlain Mushtaq was previously England's spin-bowling coach, having worked with the senior side, the Lions and the under-19s for 100 days per year.

The recruitment was made keeping in mind the Three Lions' tour of South Africa and Sri Lanka. He became, most observers believe, a far better all-round cricket long after the bulk of his worldwide career was complete, though he did make a brief reappearance in the New Zealand side in 2016 and 2017.

Patel will join England's party on December 24 in Centurion before the first Test in Supersport Park that will begin Boxing Day Against Proteas, which is live on Sky sports.

Jeetan Patel has a great deal of experience playing in England for Warwickshire and knows the players very well. He would be in a prime position to gain a permanent coaching role with England in the coming months. Now playing for Wellington Firebirds, he has announced his retirement from Cricket Wellington and will play his last match in the Super Smash against Central Stags on December 18.

The former Black Caps spinner still has one year remaining on his contract with Warwickshire in the United Kingdom though, which he will be free to complete alongside his new commitments to England before hanging up the boots for good.
