Flyers pull away from Maple Leafs at end, get fifth straight win

04 December 2019

After the Leafs fell apart in the third period of what had been a tight hockey game, losing 6-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers, the kind of spirit that had been missing on the ice at the Wells Fargo Center burst to the surface.

Travis Konecny had a goal and an assist in the third period, and Philippe Myers had three assists for Philadelphia (16-7-5), which is 6-0-1 in its past seven games.

The Flyers now sit third in the Metropolitan Division with a 15-7-5 record through 27 games.

"Carter had some big saves to make in the first", Flyers coach Alain Vigneault said. "We did a lot of things the right way and that's why we won".

Giroux fired a wrist shot past Frederik Andersen from close range after Travis Konecny's backhand pass from behind the net. He has appeared in just one of the team's five games since Sheldon Keefe was named as head coach on November 20, scoring against the Colorado Avalanche on November 23.

Keefe was displeased with the team's finish and immediately addressed the players in the locker room, something he said normally he wouldn't do after a defeat.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have looked like a different team since firing head coach Mike Babcock. "We're right there throughout and we let it get away for us at the end". "I worry more about the way we play for the logo on the jersey. We just left him out to dry", Matthews said.

Maple Leafs: 4-6-0, averaging 3.3 goals, 5.6 assists, 2.5 penalties and five penalty minutes while giving up 3.1 goals per game with a.905 save percentage.

The Maple Leafs are now occupying 4 in the Atlantic Division, but given how strong the Metropolitan Division is this season, that has them sitting below the playoff line, albeit just 3 points back of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Overall, the 22-year old sniper is having a productive season, netting 16 goals along with 15 assists and he has 15 points on the month.

Justin Holl then had a terrific scoring chance for Toronto with 1:54 left in the period but Hart made yet another tough save, his 23rd of the game. Kevin Hayes skated hard to the net and set up Laughton, who beat Andersen on the blocker side from right in front of the crease. The season series is tied 1-1, with the Flyers beating the Leafs in Toronto.

Giroux put the Flyers ahead 2-1 at 10:00.

Flyers forward Michael Raffl did not play in the third period after appearing to injure his right hand attempting to check Maple Leafs forward Kasperi Kapanen along the boards with 1:25 remaining in the second. He is expected to miss a month. … The Flyers have just one regulation loss at home, where they are 9-1-4.
