Birthday boy meets the Leafs at morning skate

Sean Couturier scored the shootout victor to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

Phillipe Myers and Oskar Lindblom scored in regulation for Philadelphia, and Brian Elliott stopped 38 shots. "We had opportunity, they had opportunity. We came out strong with a [two]-goal lead, that's how you want to come out, and we knew they were going to come back and we'd have to weather a bit of a storm".

The Flyers, who visit the Boston Bruins on Sunday, now have points in five straight (4-0-1).

Toronto also lost star winger Mitch Marner to an ankle injury early in the second period.

"Your friends from the Maple Leafs have a surprise gift coming your way!"

"There's no sense on dwelling on it". "Someone else gets an opportunity, so let's go".

William Nylander, who had a goal and an assist in regulation, scored on his attempt for Toronto. "We were able to do that".

Sean Couturier scored the deciding goal in the third round of the shootout.

After Andersen robbed Andy Andreoff and Michael Raffl in quick succession on a sequence that had fans at Scotiabank Arena chanting the Toronto netminder's name to keep the Leafs down only 2-1 early in the third, Nylander tied it less than a minute later.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux also scored in the shootout. "I don't think we ever felt awful about the way we were playing".

Lindblom made it 2-0 at 18:28 with a sharp-angled redirection from the right of the net off a pass from Travis Konecny on the power play. While at the time of this writing there has been no confirmed lineups coming into Sunday's game, we can nearly guarantee Kapanen will remain on that line (although I'd personally love Mikheyev there). It was a lucky bounce, but it went in. "I don't know if it's a few days or weeks or whatever". Auston Matthews finished the night with two assists, while Frederik Andersen made 30 saves. Both teams were playing the first game of a back-to-back.

Regardless of the absence of Marner, I thought the Leafs offence played pretty well last night, especially the Matthews line.

"He was great. It was awesome to see him get rewarded with a nice win".

"We wanted to try to do something to give him something to celebrate and be happy about". "I don't think we had the best start tonight, but obviously we got better as we went on and we were able to get a point out of it".

With five goals and 13 points through 17 games this season, Nylander is on pace to net 24 goals and 63 points, showing that he's ready to put up the numbers that he's been expected to and to continue trending in the right direction.

Matthews now has 13 goals and 21 points on the season, which ranks him tied for eighth among all National Hockey League skaters. Seven of his eight assists have come at home.

"It's a big two points".
