In this handout photo provided by the Indian Prime Minister's Office, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shake hands in Mamallapuram, India.

Today's meeting between Xi and Modi will take forward the spirit of the first day of the informal summit during which personal rapport between the two leaders becomes evident.

India and China share a 3,500km border, over which they went to war in 1962.

Xi made the following proposals.

A meeting between Xi and Modi in Wuhan, China, in April 2018 was preceded by tensions caused by a 10-week standoff between their countries' armed forces on the Bhutan border.

Besides emphasizing the expansion of trade and investment, Modi and Xi resolved to work together in facing the challenges of radicalization and terrorism, Gokhale said.

In their first informal meeting a year ago, the two leaders reached the consensus that the differences between the two countries should not be allowed to turn into disputes. "At the same time, we should seek understanding through communication and constantly resolve differences".

The two leaders agreed that China and India should respect and learn from each other so as to jointly achieve common development and prosperity, as well as the great rejuvenation of the two civilizations. "The two countries should and should be able to walk out of a grand road of friendly cooperation between two neighbouring powers. The two leaders held an extensive talk during the tour on dialogue and mutual learning among civilizations", the statement said. "We should properly manage and control problems that can not be solved for the time being". We need to find ways in which we enhance exports and China can increase imports from India.

The MEA press release stated that the two sides "agreed on the importance of concluding negotiations for a mutually-beneficial and balanced Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership".

Fifth, they should enrich cultural and people-to-people exchanges and consolidate the foundation of friendship.

"We believe, guided by leaders from the two sides, ties between China and India would become a significant factor in defining global relations in the future", the editorial added.

There is no set agenda, India's Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "This will benefit the people of our nations and the world".

Modi said that "plogging" is popular in foreign countries, and praised Belvi for promoting it in India.

He called on the two countries to take account of each other's major concerns, properly manage, control and address differences, prevent differences from evolving into disputes, develop a closer partnership and usher in a new era of India-China relationship. He said both the countries are now regaining the prominent position.

Both as ancient civilizations with several thousand years of history, China and India have carried on their exchanges and mutual learning till this day, he said.

President Xi also briefed India about Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's recent visit to Beijing.

Replying to a query, Gokhale said: "Kashmir issue was not raised and discussed at the informal summit".

The president said they will instruct relevant departments of both sides to implement the results of the meeting so as to open up new prospects of China-India cooperation.
