Massive Saddleridge fire threatening hundreds of homes: Here are the details

Mandatory evacuations were put in place for thousands of residents near the Saddleridge Fire in northern Los Angeles, California, police said on Friday, October 11.

The 210 Freeway has been shut down in both directions between the 5 and 118 freeways, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The blaze, which officials have named the Saddleridge Fire, ignited late Thursday in the city of Sylmar.

Southern California Edison cut off power to more than 21,000 customers under its Public Safety Power Shutdown in Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties.

The Saddleridge fire was burning close to the Aliso Canyon gas facility, which was the site of the largest release of methane in US history.

The Saddleridge fire made a rapid advance from Sylmar to Porter Ranch, outrunning firefighters and emergency officials. Strong winds and dry conditions carried the Saddleridge Fire across the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, resulting in almost 12,000 people having to leave their homes after officials issued mandatory evacuations in the areas depicted above.

A fast-moving wildfire skipped two freeways and raced toward residential areas in Southern California - one of several blazes fueled by gusty winds in the region.

"SoCalGas officials said personnel at their gas storage facility at Aliso Canyon had been evacuated by fire authorities". A 30-acre location fire broke out west of Balboa Boulevard and used to be transferring west against Granada Hills, officers said. "Still was able to barely get through on the Interstate 5 north".

Capt. Fernando Herrera of Cal Fire Riverside told CNN affiliate KABC: "Due to the Santa Ana wind influx, obviously this fire just completely went out of control".

The Wendy Fire in nearby Newbury Park was burning at 90 acres and 25 percent containment around 1 a.m. Friday. "It started just eating up vegetation as fast as the eye can see", he said.

Southern California Edison cut power to nearly 24,000 customers Thursday to prevent wildfires caused by high winds downing live power equipment.
