Yelich out for season with fractured knee cap

11 September 2019

Milwaukee Brewers star Christian Yelich has broken his kneecap on a foul ball and will miss the rest of the season.

But in a cruel twist of fate, Yelich suffered a fractured right knee cap in Tuesday's game against the Miami Marlins. He was tended to by the team trainer before walking off under his own power.

"It's a joy to watch him play every day. But we've got to respond, and we have a great opportunity, and the guys battled to a great win tonight".

The outfielder was the NL MVP a year ago, and Yelich entered the night batting.330 with 44 home runs and 97 RBIs for the playoff-contending Brewers, and led the majors in slugging percentage and OPS. They beat the Marlins and at press time the Cubs are down 5-2 in San Diego. Players learned about the injury during Tuesday's game, he said.

"We feel very bad for Christian", Counsell said.

General manager David Stearns said the injury is a "gut punch".

The 27-year-old was having another impressive season and was right in the thick of the National League MVP conversation.

Yelich is flying back to Milwaukee for further evaluation.
