U.S. vs. Thailand in 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup

12 June 2019

Alex Morgan scored five times as US began their Women's World Cup campaign with a record 13-0 win over Thailand on Tuesday.

12-0, 87 minutes: Morgan's brilliant flick and powerful finish delivered the best goal of the night.

Lindsey Horan, Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd also scored to beat Germany's 11-0 win over Argentina.

Morgan was involved in the second goal, too, playing a neat one-two with Rose Lavelle before the latter produced a 20-yard effort that Thailand goalkeeper Sukanya Chor Charoenying could only fumble into the back of the net.

The 13 goals the US scored are the most by any team so far in the World Cup. Chile fell to Sweden, 2-0, to open group play on Tuesday and is 0-3-2 in its last five outings.

USWNT legend Michelle Akers was the only other player to hit five in one match, doing so during the 1991 competition against Chinese Taipei, but Morgan was not content with just scoring goals.

The USWNT is the favorite to repeat as Women's World Cup champions, but that doesn't mean they're taking this tournament for granted as the defending champions. Led by five goals from Alex Morgan, the Americans set the record for the largest win in Women's World Cup history with their performance. However, let's keep in mind that this win came against a Thailand team that's ranked 34th in the world, compared to the top-ranked USA.

On the Women's World Cup Twitter account on May 7, Federation Internationale de Football Association wrote that "You can still buy tickets for a few matches" - despite it now being apparent more than 70 per cent of games were not at capacity.

The top two teams in each of the six groups will qualify automatically for the last 16, along with the four best third-placed sides.
