Three Reds set for Nations League finals with England

18 May 2019

Southgate admitted he was unsure over Kane's fitness, not just for the Nations League but the Champions League final, saying: "That's one of the unknowns". It's the biggest challenge of all to compete against each other, then leave that at the door and remember with England we are a team, we support each other.

Gareth Southgate believes his players will approach the UEFA Nations League Finals with determination to end the summer with a trophy. Equally he could play in the final and not be right five days later for us. The beauty of the Champions League is the jeopardy of the away goals which means one mistake, one error one bit of brilliance can mean so much.

"We will know more by that date [27 May] but we can make changes after that date".

Tottenham's Harry Winks and Southampton's Nathan Redmond are the surprise editions in the Three Lions squad.

Spurs have the most names in the squad, providing Kane, Winks, Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier and Dele Alli.

Southgate named a 27-strong initial squad on Thursday with the first group of players due to report to St. George's Park next week, while a number of the squad will finish their club seasons in the Emirates FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League before linking up.

Youngsters Declan Rice, Jadon Sancho and Ben Chilwell are also included along with Premier League winners Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker, John Stones and Fabian Delph.

Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard are Manchester United's only representation in the squad, though Arsenal have no players named, and Chelsea have had only Ross Barkley called up.

Speaking at a press conference, the England manager said: "I think he finished the season really well".

"For our young English players it is great that they are playing in matches that really matter while under pressure and they are being really successful because that will help England in the long run", he added.

Having topped a Nations League group which included Spain and World Cup runners-up Croatia, England are set to face the Netherlands in the semi-finals on 6 June.
