Kim offers Trump a third summit

16 April 2019

As Pyongyang waits for the United States to change its stance, it will "keep increasing the defense capabilities", the North Korean leader stressed.

"It is essential for the quit its current calculation method and approach us with a new one", Kim was quoted as saying during a speech to the Supreme People's Assembly, the country's rubber-stamp legislature.

Kim, while stressing the importance of solving problems through dialogue and negotiations, also underlined that he does not accept "the American style of dialogue" which imposes the United States' unilateral demands upon its dialogue partner.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he is willing to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump for a third time for nuclear talks - if Washington comes to the table with the "correct posture" - but laid down a year-end deadline "for a bold decision from the U.S".

"We are concerned that, rather than facilitating these business ties, some in your Administration reportedly took steps to block the South Korean government from engaging in any such economic cooperation with North Korea", the letter said.

Trump and Kim met for the first time in Singapore past year.

Kim's speech, too, came just a day after South Korea and the U.S.

Kim said Friday that he's willing "try one more time" under the conditions that the U.S. "stop the current way of calculation" and approach talks with the "right attitude and (find) a methodology that can be shared with us".

The Vietnam talks collapsed because Kim demanded excessive sanctions relief in exchange for agreeing to limited controls on his country's nuclear and missile programs, according to U.S. officials.

At the White House on Friday, Trump met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in to discuss a path forward with North Korea and the potential for a smaller nuclear disarmament deal.

North Korea's state media on Saturday issued a commentary criticizing South Korea's purchase of fighter jets, including two recently delivered F-35A jets from the United States, calling it a "serious provocative act" that could intensify tensions on the Korean peninsula. DPRK stands for the North's official name, Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The first Trump-Kim summit took place on June 12, 2018 in Singapore.

"The U.S. has set up negotiations exclusively on non-realizable methods".

"We have work to do, but I am confident we will continue to make progress", the secretary of state said.

South Korean analysts believe Choe is being positioned to supervise North Korea's top diplomats since one of his titles is vice chairman of the State Affairs Commission, a position his predecessor did not hold.

Following the collapse of the Trump-Kim summit, the North had been urging the South to break away from Washington and proceed with inter-Korean economic projects that are now held back by USA -led sanctions against the North.

Days earlier, Kim also noted the need to deal a "telling blow to the hostile forces who go with bloodshot eyes miscalculating that sanctions can bring the North to its knees". In the months leading up to the talks, Pyongyang froze its nuclear and ballistic missile tests and demolished the only known nuclear test site.

Trump told Moon: "we're talking about the big deal".
