Virgil van Dijk: That was very close to ideal

14 March 2019

After Liverpool's victory over Bayern last night, at the Allianz Arena, it means there is no representative from the Bundesliga in the quarter finals of the Champions League for the first time in 13 years.

Jürgen Klopp's side were considered underdogs to go through to the Champions League quarter-finals by many, as a result of the goalless draw at Anfield in the first leg.

Mane's goal gave them the edge but instead adding to their lead when they had the upper hand, Matip's own goal let Bayern back into the game against the run of play.

Asked if it was an ideal European performance, the No.4 told "Very close".

"But, to be fair, we did have top centre-halves at the time as well".

"But I think no question from Christmas on, this guy has been on fire".

Despite starting on the bench for the Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, the Brazilian player soon had the responsibility of replacing club captain Jordan Henderson, and did a good job even with all the pressure on the game.

Mane's sublime double - the first a deft touch, turn and chipped finish; the second a diving header - improved the Senegal international's recent tally to 10 goals in his last 10 games. Liverpool, however, kept up the pressure and were rewarded when Dutchman Van Dijk grabbed his third goal in his last four appearances in all competitions.

"To score that [first] goal is obviously a big blow for them because they have to score two and for us we were then unlucky to concede the equaliser, but the second half was outstanding".
