Gaga wins Grammy for 'Shallow'; Hugh Jackman wins 1st Grammy

Janelle Monae remembers being frustrated at last year's Grammy Awards, where male acts dominated in nominations and the only woman competing for the night's top award, Lorde, didn't get a chance to perform onstage.

And then there was a loud noise of glass shattering in the background.

Monae's groundbreaking album, "Dirty Computer", is one of five albums by women nominated for the top prize at Sunday's show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. As much as it is about me, it's not just about me.

Brandi Carlile, the folk singer nominated for six Grammys including album, song and record of the year, looked to Monae and said: "Girl, I would vote you into presidency".

Taylor Swift, who has just one nod for her best-selling 2017 album "Reputation", is filming in London. Esperanza Spalding, Melanie Fiona, Goapele and others also attended. The show kicks off tonight, February 10 - but before we see singers performing and winners being announced, we need to talk about the #FASHUN. "I relax more ... when I know that I am supported by other women ... and I feel like I can do anything".

Drake and Kendrick Lamar have the most nominations this year and both artists could win a Grammy for album of the year, record of the year, or both! Women also have a strong presence in those top categories, including Lady Gaga, SZA, Maren Morris and Ella Mai. "This isn't a trend, this is a fleeting moment, this is a critical time in our history - a turning point where the only way out is going forward", Monae said.

Women are also hoping to get their due after the head of the Recording Academy - which includes more than 13,000 music professionals - told them past year to "step up" if they wanted to do better on Grammys night.

The live ceremony in Los Angeles could see Cardi B take home her first ever Grammy and potentially become the first rapper since 2004 to win the coveted album of the year award for her "Invasion of Privacy". A representative for the Grammys didn't return an email seeking clarification about the tribute. Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day will honor the late Aretha Franklin with a performance. Falguni "Falu" Shah is nominated in Best Children's Album category for her album Falu's Bazaar, Snatam Kaur Khalsa is nominated in New Age Album category for his album Beloved and Prashant Mistry (Engine-Earz Experiment) is nominated in Best Immersive Audio Album category for his album Symbol. "I have to say, this is a golden age of composing", Kernis said, shouting out his peers in his acceptance speech.
