A Breaking Bad movie could come from creator Vince Gilligan

07 November 2018

This is envisioned as a standalone installment in the Breaking Bad franchise that lives in the Breaking Bad universe.

No one would comment, but I hear the film is written and will be directed by Breaking Bad creator/executive producer Vince Gilligan, who also co-created and executive produces Better Call Saul.

The Journal reported the film has a working title of "Greenbriar" and they say it "tracks the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom". We also don't know if the movie will be a follow-up to the acclaimed AMC series, which ended in 2013, or if it's another prequel, like the show's beloved spin-off Better Call Saul, which recently wrapped up its fourth season on AMC.

Specific details, such as if the main cast will include the show's iconic pair Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, or if the movie is due for a theatrical or TV movie release, are yet to be announced. The whole thing's pretty damn mysterious (serious question: did they intend to keep this a secret?) and we're fascinated to see where things go from here.

We don't know yet whether the movie will be a prequel to the original Breaking Bad series, but that's surely the only way that the show's original stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul would be able to reprise their roles as Walter White and Jesse Pinkman respectively. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul producing alums Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein are linked to the project, as well. Production in the Duke City is scheduled to begin mid-November through early February, according to the Journal. "Peter [Gould] wants it, the writers do, the actors do".
