Amazon India and Flipkart classify their delivery staff as semi-skilled, and some kinds of workers in their sorting centres as unskilled, industry members said.
GMB and other labor advocates criticized Amazon for the move, as hourly employees could theoretically make less money than before despite the wage increase.
"We'll leave it to Congress and professionals to decide what the right number is", Dave Clark, the company's senior vice president of worldwide operations, told CNN.More news: India signs $5 billion deal for Russian air defence systems
Named the Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies, or the Stop BEZOS Act, Sanders' bill would levy a tax on large companies equal to the value of the public benefits that their workers receive.
Over the last several months, Sanders has repeatedly called out Amazon for failing to pay some workers a living wage - a charge the booming brand has long denied.
"I want to give credit where credit is due", Sanders said Tuesday. "I want to congratulate Mr. Bezos for doing exactly the right thing". They have drawn a contrast with CEO Jeff Bezos' spectacular wealth: He is the richest person alive, worth an estimated $165 billion.
"We're excited about this and also hope others will join in", Bezos responded in a tweet.More news: Zhang downs Kerber to set up Osaka clash in Beijing
As per data compiled from Xpheno and TeamLease, delivery staff in cities like Mumbai and Pune get paid about Rs 15,000 a month, almost 60% higher than the minimum wage of Rs 9,498 in Maharashtra. All hourly workers will get a bump in pay, even if they are already making $15 an hour. "We intend to advocate for a minimum wage increase that will have a profound impact on the lives of tens of millions of people and families across this country".
The company also announced it's increasing the minimum wage for United Kingdom employees starting November 1.
"Our average U.S. hourly wage is in the mid-22s, $US22.50 roughly, which we believe dwarfs any other retail or retail-type entity out there on a big scale", Costco's CFO Richard Galanti said on a call with investors on Thursday. For example, a current job posting for a full-time warehouse worker in Omaha, Neb., starts at $12.25 an hour, while a similar job in Madison, Wis., starts at $11. Twenty-nine states have their own minimum wages higher than the federal $7.25. This new minimum wage is to take effect from Nov.1. Galanti also emphasised that the retailer offers significant raises to employees every year, something many retail rivals do not do.More news: Beat flu this winter- get your flu jab! #BeatFlu
