Texas Health Dept: Get your flu vaccines early

03 October 2018

Call your health care provider before getting vaccinated if you have questions about a severe egg allergy or if you have another illness before the vaccine clinic.

According to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 80,000 flu-related deaths during the 2017-2018 flu season, 180 of which were pediatric deaths. About 80 percent of the children killed hadn't received a shot. And exercise is good for you in more than one way - not only does it keep you in shape, but it can help lower stress and help you sleep better. But another, more common problem is that women who get the flu during pregnancy are more likely to have a preterm birth than pregnant women who don't get the flu. The health department also offers vaccines for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Rotavirus, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (whooping cough), Haemophilus Influezae type b, Polio, Pneumococcal conjugate, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (Chicken Pox), Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Meningitis, and Shingles. In fact, the CDC even underscores the need for older Americans to be vaccinated because they are at higher risk of developing serious complications from flu.

You are only entitled to a flu jab if you are in one of the groups outlined as vulnerable to the flu by the NHS regardless of if you have a cold. There's even a special version of the vaccine especially designed for seniors.

Jason Briscoe, director of pharmacy operations at Drug Mart, said there are different options for the flu vaccine. Eighty percent of the children who died previous year were not vaccinated. The others protect against three. "The nasal spray flu vaccine, also known as FluMist, is once again on the list of recommended flu vaccines for the upcoming flu season".

With the government-funded influenza vaccination program set to begin on October 15, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday urged people aged 50 and above to get vaccinated.

The high mortality rate was unusual because it was caused by a "normal" - albeit severe - flu season, not by a new pandemic influenza strain.

Alberta Health Services recommends children under nine years old getting an influenza vaccine for the first time receive two doses of vaccine.

Despite general advice for college students to get vaccinated, as residence halls serve as a breeding ground for viruses like the flu, many choose not to protect themselves against a potentially fatal virus. The observation hasn't been extensively researched, but it's possible that senior citizens who are vaccinated in September may not be well protected in February.

"The influenza virus is tricky and changes over time", says Dr. Mark Cohen, Chief Medical Officer at Piedmont Hospital.
