Google is shutting down YouTube Gaming (but that isn't a bad thing)

The new hub for YouTube gaming content will be at youtube.com/gaming.

This is an interesting turn of events, considering that the beginnings of the YouTube Gaming app stemmed from the popularity of gaming videos on the main YouTube site. Instead, they'll be integrated into YouTube proper, so features like game pages, super chat, and channel memberships will all be making the jump.

Now, the Gaming category will reclaim a spot on the main site and application, "launching a new Gaming destination to give gamers a home on YouTube", the website says in the announcement.

In an announcement made on Tuesday, YouTube has confirmed that a dedicated YouTube Gaming app isn't necessary and, as a result, will be shutting it down.

YouTube Gaming, a "standalone" app that was launched in 2015, was meant to be a separate destination for all these gaming content lovers, but YouTube admits it wasn't the best, because not everyone fully understood its goal. According to Variety citing App Annie data, Twitch's Android app was the 15th most popular entertainment app on Google's Play Store while YouTube Gaming was at number 283. 50 billion hours of gaming content has been watched on YouTube in the a year ago alone. You can watch all the same content, and if you get bored with the fifty millionth Fortnite video, you can click over to your recommended daily dose of cute kitten videos from the same location and refresh yourself. If you've subscribed to channels you'll see that content there, too. YouTube will also show some love to smaller creators each week via a new "On The Rise" feature. With this rolling out now, you'll be met with the top streams currently taking place, a selection of games to watch, trending videos, plus more.

YouTube Gaming will now also work hard to promote up and coming content creators and streamers, something it's previous app was failing at. Did you ever use the dedicated YouTube Gaming app?
