Trump expected to visit areas hit by Hurricane Florence

16 September 2018

The death toll in Puerto Rico in the immediate aftermath of Maria grew from six to 13 by the time Trump arrived on the island.

A report from George Washington University and the University of Puerto Rico concluded on August 29 that 2,975 likely died as a result of Hurricane Maria and the catastrophic conditions on the USA territory after the storm. Trump in his tweets blamed Democrats for inflating the numbers.

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico".

"FIFTY TIMES LAST ORIGINAL NUMBER - NO WAY!" he tweeted late Friday.

"Those are just the facts of what happens when a frightful hurricane hits an isolated place like an island", Ryan said when asked about Trump's tweet.

Facing criticism over his handling of the hurricane that devastated Puerto Rico previous year, US President Donald Trump has accused rival Democrats of inflating the number of people killed there.

Hostin blamed the Jones Act, saying it allowed the US government to "pillage and rape" the island since its inception in 1920, before asking why Trump didn't have an equal reaction to Maria as President Obama did to Haiti, which isn't even a USA territory.

Public health experts have estimated that almost 3,000 perished because of the effects of Hurricane Maria.

It found that 2,975 people died in Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Maria. Both have made outreach to Florida's growing Puerto Rican population a focus of their campaigns. "We have a moral obligation to do better, not only to finish the job in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, but to prevent the same type of inadequate response from ever happening again".

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello commissioned George Washington University's Public Health School to look into the question.

The study from GWU says several factors led to deaths being reported long after the storm had hit. Even some Republicans suggested the president had gone too far Thursday.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement to The Hill that Trump would head to storm-damaged regions "early to middle next week" and that more information about his travel plans would be forthcoming.

But Trump has continued to boast about the handling of Maria, calling it "an incredible unsung success" as he warned residents of the Carolinas not to take chances with Florence.

For the first few weeks, the death toll was only put at 16.

"This is what denial following neglect looks like: Mr Pres in the real world people died on your watch".

A United States government report published this month concluded that the federal response in Puerto Rico was hampered by a lack of trained staff as well as by major logistical challenges.
