16 September 2018

Jabari Bird appears for his arraignment on domestic violence charges.

He was arrested September 7 after he allegedly assaulted a woman, identified in court as a girlfriend, in Brighton, Mass. Bail was set at $50,000 cash.

Bird's accuser is a 20-year-old student at a prominent university in Boston.

Bird also is accused of throwing the victim against the wall of his apartment, kicking her repeatedly in the stomach after she regained consciousness and trapping her inside a bathroom. Bail was set at $100,000 - with $50,000 required in cash - according to MassLive's Jacqueline Tempera.

The Celtics called the allegations disturbing and said the team's 'thoughts are with the victim'.

"I do not condone violence against women", he said.

The woman told police that Bird would strangle her until she fell "limp" and that once she caught her breath, he would begin his attack again.

'The Celtics organization deplores domestic violence of any kind, and we are deeply disturbed by the allegations against Jabari Bird, ' the team said in a statement. The woman said Bird's physical assault caused her to suffer mental distress.

Bird then signed a two-year, standard National Basketball Association contract in July - making him an official member of the Celtics' 15-man roster - after averaging 16.8 points on 57 percent shooting in summer league.

The team notes that domestic violence issues are handled by the NBA's main office.

The Boston Celtics need to move on from Jabari Bird. She also reported that he texted her after she escaped stating that if she didn't return to his apartment he would kill himself. Bird was originally scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, but that was delayed as he remained hospitalized at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. The team will have no further comment at this time.

The Celtics drafted Bird in the second round, 56th overall, out of California in the 2017 National Basketball Association draft.
