32 killed, 128 injured in attack on protesters

14 September 2018

The incident occurred on the highway that connects Jalalabad with the Torkham border pass between Afghanistan and Pakistan, where a protest against a local police commander from the neighbouring Achin province was being held, Efe news reported.

The peaceful protesters accused a local police officer of misusing power, calling upon the government to sack and punish him when the blast happened, the official added.

At the end of August, two people died and another four were wounded in a suicide attack during a protest near the office of the electoral commission in the province.

Afghanistan's parliamentary elections are due in October this year.

No any other group immediately claimed responsibility for any of the attacks, but both Taliban insurgents and the Islamic State group are active in eastern Afghanistan, especially in Nangarhar province.

Local officials said the wounded were taken to Jalalabad hospitals.

The twin blasts took place an hour after a bomb exploded outside Biba Hawa girls' school in nearby Behsood district, Jalalabad education department spokesman Asif Shinwari said. Earlier estimates put the death toll at 32.

Qaderi said rescue efforts were being hampered by reports of another suicide bomber in the area, making police and emergency services cautious about approaching the scene.

Men carry a dead body with a civilian vehicle in Momandara district of Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. That blast was later followed by two others in Behsud district, also near two schools. The provincial governor's spokesman, Attahullah Khogyani, made a statement with a revised casualty total on Wednesday.

In addition, two air strikes were carried out in Baghlan, another northern province on Tuesday, following six the day before and USA advisers were on the ground supporting Afghan troops, the spokesman added.
