A almost weeklong celebration of the life of US senator John McCain - war hero, maverick, two-time presidential candidate and outspoken critic of Donald Trump - came to a solemn and subdued end Sunday as he was laid to rest at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Lieberman, who was once tapped to be on McCain's presidential ticket despite being an Independent who caucused with the Democrats, said that Meghan's father would have been proud of her "direct" manner of speaking and added that she did a "magnificent" job.
Former presidents Bush and Obama - both of whom beat McCain in presidential elections - were asked to give eulogies at his funeral. Attendance at the private memorial service will be limited to McCain's family, close friends, military leaders and former Naval Academy classmates. "The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great", she said to applause.
Before the service, McCain's motorcade stopped at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall, where wife Cindy McCain laid a wreath to honor her husband, a former Navy aviator and prisoner of war, and other Vietnam War veterans.More news: Bella Thorne Hit By Burglars Days After Attempted Break
Those offering tributes or readings during the funeral service included Sen.
"We should all strive to follow his example and honor his legacy", said Hogan, noting that it was an honor welcoming his family to lay McCain to rest in Annapolis.
John McCain appears to have handed his feud with President Trump down to the next generation, reports USA Today, and the latter took to Twitter to apparently respond to Meghan McCain's swipe at his campaign slogan while eulogizing her father on Saturday.
Among the pallbearers on a list provided by McCain's office were Frank Gamboa, his academy roommate; Defense Secretary Jim Mattis; and two men who were POWs with McCain in Vietnam, John Fer and Everett Alvarez Jr. Many held their hands over their hearts and waved American flags. The senator was buried next to his best friend from Annapolis days, Chuck Larson, who died in 2014.
On Friday in Detroit, singer Stevie Wonder also made reference to Trump's slogan during his tribute to Franklin, the legendary recording artist who died of pancreatic cancer at age 76 on August 16.
"No. 1, Americans appreciate military service".
"He tried to drain the swamp before it was cool, that you can fight hard and still be respected. So I'm totally OK with everything". John McCain's funeral procession was expected to pass, and waited. This was a civics lesson for anybody who wanted to listen. "Because of the way he conducted his public life".More news: New Yorker makes embarrassing climb down and CANCELS Steve Bannon's festival appearance
