The British Open sent a $154,000 payout to the wrong Tommy Fleetwood

10 August 2018

A Twitter user sent a screenshot of his friend's mobile bank statement Wednesday that showed a $154,480 deposit from the European Tour into his friend, Florida resident Tommy Fleetwood's account.

After his 12th place finish at The Open last month, Tommy Fleetwood was transferred the €133,000 or so prize money during the week.

Fleetwood's payout was reportedly deposited into the Wells Fargo bank account of a man with the same name, according to a screencap tweeted by golf school owner Greg Thorner, apparently a friend of the other Fleetwood.

Golf Digest have confirmed that this situation, is, in fact, true and to his vast credit, Fleetwood is laughing the whole thing off.

"My mother called me to say she's been getting lots of calls from the media".

Fleetwood returned the money and it went to the British Open finisher. The only problem? It was the wrong Tommy Fleetwood.

'My friend Tommy is a good guy and would always pay it back. I think what happened was that he played some Challenge Tour events on the European Tour back in the day and they must still have his details. At least he can always say he won $154,000 at the Open'.

'I honestly didn't know anything about it, ' said the Fleetwood ranked 11th in the world.

'I wouldn't even know if I'd been paid or not because I don't really look.

His wife and manager, Clare Fleetwood, has received an apology from the European Tour and is trying to establish if the funds have been transfered to the proper account.

"It looks pretty genuine and they (the European Tour) are looking into it and I'm sure they'll feel pretty bad about it".

It took me about an hour to get that sorted out, and I have plenty more stories like that.
