Peter Dutton 'lucky to escape' deadly Lombok natural disaster

A major quake on the Indonesian island of Lombok today killed at least 19 people, injured dozens and damaged buildings, officials said.

At 6.46pm Sunday 5 August local time, a magnitude 6.9 quake struck Lombok, with the epicentre located 18 kilometres south-west of East Lombok island.

Most of the quake victims were away from the main tourist spots and coastal districts in the south and west, and were in the mountainous north and east of the island.

Mr Little and Australian politician Peter Dutton, who were in Lombok for a conference, were evacuated to the local airport. The warning was lifted on Sunday after only small waves were recorded.

Sutopo said a lot of residents did not understand the level status of the tsunami warning issued by BMKG in the wake of Lombok quake thus they still stayed in the hills or higher places despite the warning issue was lifted since August 5.

The 47-year-old posted an update after a quake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck, the second one to have hit following a series of quakes in Lombok on July 29. It triggered landslides that briefly trapped trekkers on popular mountain hiking routes.

The Garuda Indonesia airline said it was adding extra flights from Lombok to help tourists leave. The quake was also felt in Bali.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said so far more than 4,600 foreign and Indonesian tourists had been evacuated from the islands, with ships taking people to ports in Lombok and Benoa, Bali.

"Bali. Trembling. So long", Teigen tweeted Sunday.

The agency warned all of the numbers were likely to increase as search operations continued Monday.

A woman was pulled alive on Tuesday from under a grocery store that fell apart in the rural north of the tropical holiday island, near the epicenter of Sunday's quake.

The strong tremor, which sent people running in panic from homes and hotels in the early morning. He said the quake "was powerful enough to put us on the floor" and cut power.
