Microsoft's Entry Level Tablet Arrives in August for $399 — Surface Go

Its performance wasn't incredible, but it was good enough for most common productivity tasks.

It runs a full version of Windows 10.

But iOS on the vanilla iPad is also optimised for touch operation, while Windows 10 is still awkward in that mode.

The 10-inch display is sharp, with 1800 x 1200-pixel resolution, and in person, the panel looks a lot more colorful than other cheap 2-in-1s. The device starts at a price of $399 (or approx Rs 27,433), but you will have to shell out more for a type cover and Surface Pen.

An official document leaked by a Reddit user indicates that the device might possibly be launched this week, along with a new Type Cover.

Enter the new Surface Go. The processor has a 6W TDP which is configurable to 4.5W, although we're not sure of Microsoft's choice for the Surface Go. This means it'll be more than good enough for browsing the web, watching Netflix, and putting together a PowerPoint presentation. Launched to compete with popularly available budget tablets including the recently launched Mi Pad and Apple's iPad Air 2, Surface Go is fitted with Intel's Pentium Gold 4415Y processor with 4GB and 8GB RAM options.

Like Microsoft's earlier devices, the Surface Go will work with optional keyboards and mouses.

562g body with USB-C and microSD. Industry watchers expected the device, dubbed the Surface Mini, to be released in 2014, but it never materialized. It does have a headphone jack, though.

In its standard configuration, the Surface Go will come with Windows 10 S, which only supports apps from the Microsoft Store. You will be able to upgrade to a full version of Windows 10 Home for free, if you want a full desktop experience, but you likely will sacrifice battery life.

Both of these are WiFi versions of the device and Microsoft has also promised LTE versions of the Surface Go later this year.

Another cool feature on the Surface Go is its facial recognition login, which makes more sense than it does on a smartphone. Users will also be glad to know that there's a Surface Pen ready too. However, it is not quite as powerful as the Surface Pro in terms of specifications and features.

It's been rumored for a long time now that Microsoft was working on a tinier Surface: Microsoft released the 10.8-inch Surface 3 back in 2015, but there hasn't been anything even sort of like it since.

At first glance, the tweet might not seem like anything new, especially if we weren't expecting a hardware announcement around the corner.

After all, there are other Windows-based iPad competitors out there from various PC partners.
