U.S., Canada & Mexico to host 2026 World Cup

14 June 2018

"At the 68th Fifa Congress, member associations have voted in favour of the North American United bid, which will now organise the 2026 Fifa World Cup". When Qatar won the 2022 bid in controversial fashion in 2010, it seemed like having the World Cup return to the United States would be impossible but the 2026 bid was first rate and combining Canada and Mexico was convincing.

Morocco have congratulated the United States of America, Canada and Mexico for winning the united bid to host the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

Although it would be the first tournament to be hosted by three nations, the vast majority of games will be held in the US.

Canada will host men's World Cup matches for the first time.

In 2026, however, there won't be any official World Cup festivities in Chicago, after Mayor Rahm Emanuel pulled out of the North American bid in March.

"FIFA could not provide a basic level of certainty on some major unknowns that put our city and taxpayers at risk".

Both bids made their final appeals to UEFA voters in Moscow on Tuesday, with Morocco and United expected to get a vast show of support from their respective confederations.

Morocco has largely avoided competing with the North Americans in a dash for cash.

That's just one of 12 stadiums that teams from 32 countries will be playing at during the World Cup.

At the time, the City of Vancouver said it was "extremely disappointed" it was no longer being considered for the tournament, adding that "hosting the biggest sporting event on earth would have offered significant economic benefits". The attractive game transcends borders and cultures. "Football today is the only victor".

It's estimated to cost each city between $30 and $50 million to host 2026 games.

Years of meticulous planning and preparation have all led to this moment and now, on the eve of the first ball being kicked at Russian Federation 2018, Peter Schmeichel pays a visit to Moscow to sample the pre-World Cup flavor.

Before the 1994 World Cup in the United States, Jacksonville served as the host for a friendly match between the USA team and Moldova, played at Wolfson Park while the old Gator Bowl underwent extensive reconstruction.

"I would like to thank the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Majesty the King, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, and my good friend His Excellency Turki Al-Sheikh for your tremendous support of the United bid", said Cordeiro.

A total of 23 finalists between the three countries have been selected as possible locations for World Cup games.
