Nadal sweeps Thiem to claim 11th title at Roland Garros

14 June 2018

Rafael Nadal continued his clay-court dominance on Sunday by winning an 11th French Open title after beating Dominic Thiem in straight sets at Roland Garros.

Despite his remarkable efforts, the 32-year-old remains three titles behind Federer, who will be targeting a 21st Slam win at Wimbledon next month.

Chief among those praising Nadal was defender Ramos.

Play has begun in the men's final of the French Open, with Rafael Nadal comfortably holding serve to love in the first game.

Tennis is lucky to have Nadal.

Spain's La Liga official account also congratulated the tennis great.

"In the third set I noticed I had cramps in my left hand, I was scared because there was a lot of humidity", he explained in his post-match interview.

The Spaniard secured an 11th title at Roland Garros on Sunday and 17th major of his career.

Nadal is now the first player in the Open Era, male or female, to win the same Grand Slam tournament 11 times, a feat that has been dubbed La Undécima, after Real Madrid's bid to win an 11th European Cup.

"I still remember when you won here the first time in 2005".

But Nadal roared into the 2017 Australian Open final, losing to Federer, then captured his record 10th French Open crown in June a year ago, setting the stage for another title run in the Flushing Meadows fortnight at the US Open in September.

Perhaps. But under so much pressure from Nadal all afternoon, Thiem made mistakes that piled up.

Across the last 12 months on clay, Nadal has held serve 88.7% to Thiem's 85.7% (3.0% edge) while breaking opponents 50.0% to 30.1% (19.9% edge), and this incredible advantage he has on return was a big factor in me pricing Nadal as a [1.17] favourite to lift the trophy today. In 112 best-of-five-set matches, Nadal has never lost after claiming the first set.

"So I am not much anxious about the future".

Nadal coasts to a record 10th French Open title, demolishing Wawrinka in a brutally one-sided final which also earns the Spaniard a 15th Grand Slam crown.

Despite matching Nadal forehand for forehand, Thiem was undone in the 10th game when three errors handed Nadal the opening set after 52 minutes on court.

"But after that, the things went better and better".

Siniakova was the doubles runner-up at last year's U.S. Open with a different partner.

Federer can regain top spot in the rankings by reaching the final in Stuttgart and, while congratulating Nadal on his astonishing achievement, the 36-year-old is aiming high on his start to the grass-court swing.

He is the only man to beat Nadal on clay over the past two seasons, doing so twice.

During the two week Grand Slam, Nadal had to call on the elements to survive the dogged resistance of Diego Schwartzman in the quarterfinal in which he dropped his first set of the tournament.

"I'd like to dedicate this victory to Jana Novotna", said Krejcikova in honor of her compatriot and 1998 Wimbledon champion who died of cancer in November past year at age 49.

589 tournaments won, when tennis was still a sport for amateurs.
