Torreira has a chance of starting in Uruguay's midfield at the World Cup after only earning his senior global debut in March, although it may be better for Arsenal's transfer hopes if he didn't make their XI.

Sampdoria sporting director Carlo Osti told Italian broadcaster Rai Sport earlier this week: "Torreira has a €25m (£22m) release clause, everyone knows that".

The 22-year-old Uruguay global, has emerged as a preferred option for new Gunners boss Unai Emery, who wants a defensive midfielder brought in before next season.

The player has a €25 million release clause in his Sampdoria contract, something which the Serie A side's club president has spoken about recently.

With Napoli rumoured to have lost interest in the player, Arsenal are now likely to be favourites to secure the young man's signature, providing much excitement for the followers of the Gunners, who are in the market for a new, young defensive midfielder.

If Arsenal do get their man, he will follow defender Stephan Lichtsteiner through the Emirates doors as their second signing of the summer. Until now, Torreira has made just three substitute appearances for the national team but Unai Emery's are wary that the midfielder's valuation may rise next month with a strong World Cup showing.
