Kim Jong Un goes for surprise nighttime walk ahead of summit

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing US troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before". Trump had earlier tweeted about "excitement in the air!"

"I believe we're going to have a terrific success or a modified success", Trump said during a press conference last week with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. It's where former Chinese President Hu Jin Tao stayed during the 2009 APEC Summit (and don't tell Trump, but Hillary Clinton stayed there in 2011, too).

If things fall apart, it could be because "Trump presents Kim with a hard-and-fast binary choice: relinquish nuclear weapons and live in peace and prosperity, or cling to them and risk the impoverishment of your people and the safety of your regime", Haas said.

Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying more than one meeting may be necessary.

He accompanied the young leader at all four of his recent summits, twice with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and twice with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North.

Trump and Kim planned to meet one-on-one for most of an hour- joined only by translators. It's a reflection of the intense global curiosity over Kim's sudden turn to diplomacy in recent months after a slew of North Korean nuclear and missile tests previous year raised serious fears of war.
