Detroit Pistons Name Dwane Casey as Head Coach

12 June 2018

The Detroit Pistons are hiring Dwane Casey to be their next head coach, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Prior to the NBA, Casey spent five seasons as a head coach in the Japanese Basketball League and worked with the Japanese national team. The latter pulled his name from consideration following a second interview, making this the predictable outcome.

Casey himself was sacked from the Raptors after the Cavaliers swept them in the Eastern Conference playoffs after seven seasons in Toronto.

Dwane Casey coaches the Toronto Raptors against the Washington Wizards during the first round of the playoffs on April 17, 2018.

He replaces Stan Van Gundy, who was sacked in May. He posted a record of 152-176 overall in his four seasons in Detroit, guiding the Pistons to the playoffs only in 2015-16, when they lost in the first round.

"He's an outstanding man with impressive character". With the offseason officially starting after the Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers for the NBA Championship, it was time for the Pistons to pull the trigger.

He coached the Minnesota Timberwolves for a little more than one season, going 53-69. The 61-year-old finished his tenure as the team's winningest coach but could never get it over the hump in the playoffs. He led Toronto to four Atlantic Division titles in five years, and three consecutive 50-win seasons.

The Pistons parted ways with general manager Jeff Bower in addition to coach Stan Van Gundy. The Raptors then outplayed the Washington Wizards in the playoffs, but were swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
