Trump, Lee to hold bilateral meetings, working lunch today

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un arrives in Singapore on Sunday. Their meeting is expected to begin Tuesday with a one-on-one session - just Trump and Kim and their personal interpreters.

"We have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World", Trump tweeted from Air Force One en route to Singapore, predicting that counterpart Kim Jong Un "will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before". The official was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) released a statement saying the two discussed mutual relations and the situation on the Korean peninsula, with Prime Minister Lee thanking Kim for his and Trump's "bold and admirable decision" to hold the summit.

During the lunch, Trump said he thinks "things can work out very nicely" in Tuesday's meeting.

After more than a day's silence on Twitter, Trump posted four tweets about trade disagreements that were the talk of the G-7 conference, followed by a quick mention of the summit he is now attending - writing "Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!" - before turning back to tweeting about trade once more.

Just meeting with Trump will also give Kim a recognition North Korea has long sought, setting him up as global player and the leader of a country worthy of respect.
