Pompeo says USA is willing to 'make security assurances' to North Korea

Besides, Singapore's prime minister "wished Chairman Kim success for the US-DPRK Summit and expressed hope that the US-DPRK meeting will advance the prospects for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and the larger region".

Trump was the oldest United States president ever to take office when he was sworn in a little over 500 days ago, and will turn 72 on Thursday. "I think I'll know pretty quickly whether or not, in my opinion, something positive will happen".

When Donald Trump meets North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday for perhaps the most significant nuclear talks since the Cold War, the American president will have his link to the US nuclear arsenal nearby at all times.

The MFA also said Lee will meet President Trump separately on Monday. "I look forward to meeting him and have a feeling that this one-time opportunity will not be wasted!"

He says the prepared to show North Korea that rather than denuclearization posing a threat to North Korea, it's "the opposite".

The President would be wise not to take the North Koreans lightly, even though he is convinced he has superior dealmaking skills well beyond those of his predecessors that will help him size up Kim in an instant. But his ruthlessness at home and a human rights record that United Nations investigators have described as "harrowing" have left many unconvinced about his sincerity.

The North Korean autocrat's every move will be followed by 3,000 journalists who have converged on Singapore, and by gawkers around the world, up until he shakes hands with Trump on Tuesday.

As the final preparations for the summit were being made, some veteran diplomats warned against an all-or-nothing approach from the U.S. Kim has led the USA team at the demilitarized zone working on a joint communique with North Korea.

"North Korea can not denuclearise completely right now and hope to be safe from a president who said we're going to rain fire and fury on you, from a country that's been calling you evil for 25 years", said Horacio Falcao, a negotiations expert at the INSEAD graduate business school in Singapore.

Many experts on North Korea, one of the most insular and unpredictable countries in the world, remain skeptical Kim will ever completely abandon nuclear weapons.

Trump himself seemed optimistic as well.

The White House and State Department have said little about those talks, though people briefed on them said American negotiators found it difficult to make significant headway with the North Koreans, in part because the White House did not back them up in taking a hard line.

"Wouldn't it be wonderful if we walked out and everything was settled all of a sudden from sitting down for a couple of hours?"

Authorities imposed tight security around the summit venue and related luxury hotels - including installing extra pot plants outside Kim's expected accommodation to obstruct reporters' views. "But I see over a period of time".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's Twitter feed was busy during the first day of the summit, sharing photos of different meetings.

At the Quebec meeting of the leaders of seven industrial powers, Trump yanked the USA endorsement of a joint economic agreement among the seven countries.

Previous White House administrations had denied Kim, his father and grandfather, the "reward" of a face-to-face meeting with a sitting U.S. president. He surprised them again a couple of weeks ago when he called it off, leaving the region anxious about risky consequences.

The cancelled meeting was ultimately resurrected, and now the pair are less than a day away from holding historic talks.

Trump acknowledged the difficulty of gleaning much information concerning Kim, who has scant experience on the global stage and about whom foreign intelligence agencies have struggled to gather much beyond basic biographical data.

South Korean media also claims there were fears that Kim's Soviet-era plane might not survive the trip.
