Kudlow Blames Trudeau for ‘Betrayal’ Before North Korea Talks

11 June 2018

Peter Navarro, a trade adviser to President Donald Trump, escalated the White House's rebuke of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him weak and dishonest on Sunday.

Sunday, Trump's chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Trudeau of undermining the US and its allies with comments he made at the G7 summit.

Asked what Trudeau did that amounted to betrayal, Kudlow criticized the Canadian leader for holding a press conference in which he called USA tariffs "insulting".

Trump left the summit after breakfast Saturday to fly to Singapore to prepare for his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

More troubling, POTUS threatened to yank the endorsement of the summit's communique, essentially undoing the diplomatic gains made by the world leaders.

"Of course it was, in large part, " Kudlow said.

Tensions have been building between the two countries for months, as President Trump has targeted Canada as one of the many countries he sees as giving American the short end of the stick in trade deals. "That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did".

Asked about Navarro's comments, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said, according to reporter Daniel Dale, "Canada does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks".

Trump, who was headed to Singapore for a summit with North Korean leaders, criticized Trudeau for making "false statements" at a news conference held after Trump had left Canada.

"This year's G7 meeting is already going down as the G6 + 1, with six members on one side and President Trump on the other", Al Jazeera's John Hendren, reporting from Quebec, said.

And Roland Paris, a former foreign policy adviser to Mr Trudeau, jabbed on Trump on Twitter: "Big tough guy once he's back on his airplane". He also said that because of Trudeau's comments, he instructed US trade representatives to not sign the communique the G-7 leaders had agreed upon expressing the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade". And what did Trudeau do as soon as the plane took off from Canadian airspace, Trudeau stuck our president in the back.

This followed two days of feuding with some of his closest allies - one French official told reporters of a "very unusual" and "bitter" exchange Friday between world leaders, describing the U.S. president making his case in a "Rant". "We need to stand with our democratic allies".

"I think she is outlining Canada's actual position and is outlining actual steps that have been taken and are being taken", he told Xinhua in an interview.

"As a representative of IL, a state with one of the most important trade relationships with Canada, I have every desire to see our negotiations with Canada continue productively and beneficially, but Prime Minister Trudeau is sabotaging that cause by driving both sides into their corners instead of encouraging a more diplomatic dialogue", Krishnamoorthi said.

France is also standing by the G7 communique, a French presidency official said, adding anyone departing from the commitments made at the summit would be showing their "incoherence and inconsistency".
