Dialogue with Trump could be 'constructive': Putin

11 June 2018

The two leaders met at the sidelines of 18th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State Summit in progress at Qingdao, China.

China and Russian Federation grappled in 2017 with how best to respond to not just the regular missile launches by Pyongyang, but also its nuclear tests. And Senator Edward Markey, a Democrat from MA and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Trump's proposal comes at a time he's clashing with Canada and other USA allies over trade.

Speaking to AFP in Lithuania's capital Vilnius, senior Iranian official Massoumeh Ebtekar said Iran hoped European powers, Russian Federation and China would confirm their willingness to uphold the deal "as soon as possible because Iran can not wait forever".

China and Russian Federation already enjoy a relatively extensive economic dialogue, which has warmed in several areas since the crisis in Ukraine that contributed to Moscow's suspension from the G8.

"Member states of the SCO are key to the success of the Belt and Road initiative and China's growing influence as a Eurasian power", said Murphy.

President Putin likewise praised the ever more intensified trading relations between the two countries and in particular spoke of the importance of this years ratification of a China-Eurasian Economic Union free trading agreement that will come into effect in 2019.

"I see this as an acknowledgement and an evaluation of Russia's efforts to develop a comprehensive strategic partnership with China", he said.

Besides agreeing to further strengthen bilateral economic relations between the two neighbouring Islamic states, President Mamnoon Hussain and Iranian President Dr Hassan Rouhani said that the connectivity between Gwadar and Chabahar seaports would further deepen the economic ties between the two states.

Stressing that Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination remains Russia's diplomatic priority, Putin said the two countries have taken care of each other's core interests and major concerns, actively promoted dialogues and cooperation in political, economic and people-to-people and cultural areas, and worked closely in global affairs.

He also said the G7 countries had "again" failed to provide any evidence that Russian Federation was behind the poisoning of a former double agent and his daughter in Britain in March.

He emphasized that the bloc's members, who also include China, four ex-Soviet Central Asian nations, as well as India and Pakistan, are anxious about the US move.

On Friday, Putin said both nations "are interested in establishing peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula".

In the energy sector, the two states have signed a $400 billion natural gas supply deal for an approximately 3,200km gas pipeline from eastern Siberia to northeast China.

Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, attended the talks.

Xi, speaking just before he put the medal on Putin, called him a "good and old friend of the Chinese people".

"I am sure that if such level of development in this area is maintained, our bilateral trade could reach $100 billion this year", Putin suggested. In 2013, Putin's pro-Assad positions over the conflict in Syria collided with the other seven - with remarks like then-President Barack Obama's "of course our opinions do not coincide" and Putin's, "We have different perspectives on the problem".

It was the first time China has awarded the medal since it was established in 2015.

"It's a disgraceful statement", Rice said on CBS.
