Digby's Relay for Life is scheduled for June 16 at the Digby arena and Yarmouth will have its Relay for Life June 23 at the Mariners Centre.

Rain may have delayed the event, but for the hundreds of people that gathered at Riverwalk Park it was worth the wait to be a part of the annual Relay for Life to support the American Cancer Society's mission to fight cancer. You can have the best family and friends in the world but they don't really get it.

The preteens and teens organized a lemonade stand to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

"Three years ago, I never thought I'd be on this stage speaking to all of you, telling you about a journey that I sometimes can not even comprehend myself", said Heffernan.

"Money raised today goes primarily to fund cancer research because without research, there can be no cure, there can be no improvements in treatment, or quality of life or no remission". "Prince George can be so proud of what we do for Relay For Life, we walk for 24 hours because someone fights cancer for 24 hours a day", says Cassie. "It doesn't mean we have to empty our bank account for somebody".

Mary Phillips knows the many ways cancer can affect a person's life. "We need to work together".

Her mother and two of her sisters are breast cancer survivors, like Phillips, who beat the disease in 2006.

The event is organized by the American Cancer Society. Teams must have one participant on the track at all times. Last year, she raised over $5,000. The first lap was walked by cancer survivors.

She and other survivors led the first lap around the track, inspiring others to keep moving forward - on their fight, their fundraising and awareness.

Relay Co-Chair Tracy Holsworth Broomer is hoping to make the ceremonies even more impactful by welcoming a dad, husband, friend, co-worker, neighbor, or a special someone to share their survivor or caregiver story at the Relay's Opening Ceremony.

"(Survivors are) the reason why we plan this event", Zeller said. "It's an honour to be the face of Relay and I'm happy to help others".

The Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life takes place at Clearwater Arena Park, 1400 Wellington St., on June 15, from 6 p.m.to 12 a.m. I had someone who invited me.

"It was a sad day when I was told I had cancer", Cupan said.

In addition to the survivor lap, the event included a silent auction, fundraising awards, speakers and the luminaria ceremony, in which participants honor those who are now battling cancer and those who have died from cancer by turning off the stadium lights and lighting tealight candles inside decorated paper bags.
