Ex-Aston Villa defender Jlloyd Samuel killed in auto crash

A MOVING minute's applause was held at Villa Park on Tuesday night to pay tribute to Jlloyd Samuel who was killed in a auto crash in Lymm.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and Samuel's former club sides were also among those paying their respects, with Villa players donning black armbands during their Championship play-off fixture against Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.

"Sadly, the driver of the vehicle, Jlloyd Samuel, 37, from Lymm, died at the scene", a police statement said.

The club said: "Everybody associated with Bolton Wanderers Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former defender, Jlloyd Samuel".

His Range Rover hit a van at High Legh near Warrington, with the footballer pronounced dead at the scene.

They added: "His next of kin have been informed and are now being supported by specially trained officers".

"The driver of the van, a 54-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital for treatment". He played two full global matches for Trinidad and Tobago in 2009.

Samuel played 199 times for Aston Villa between 1998 and 2007 and represented England at under-18, under-20 and under-21 level.

"Jlloyd leaves behind a family including a wife and four children who are devastated by their sudden loss".

Latapy, who played for Porto and Rangers in a stellar career, remembered Samuel as "ambitious and personable".

"The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and his former national team-mates at this time extend deepest condolences to his family members both in the United Kingdom and here in Trinidad and Tobago".

Samuel progressed through the ranks at Charlton before joining Aston Villa.
