And Mancini hinted his first squad could feature a familiar face from his title-winning sides at both Manchester City and Inter Milan, Mario Balotelli.

"Even in hard times, Italy can boast of having players of great quality", Mancini said in comments on the FIGC's social media channels.

"We'll definitely consider him and we'll probably call him", Mancini said at his presentation on Tuesday.

Balotelli has not played for Italy since the 2014 World Cup.

Mancini will stay at Zenit until the final round of Russian fixtures on May 13.

He led Manchester City to their first English league title in 44 years in 2012, and won 3 Serie A titles with Inter Milan.

The Italian football federation made the announcement late Monday, saying Mancini will be introduced on Tuesday but without providing contract details. "This is testimony to his complete determination and desire to take on this job". His contract will run until 2020, but stipulates an automatic extension should Italy qualify for the European Championships that year, and also includes various incentive-based bonus payments.

The 53-year-old has been handed the daunting task of lifting Italy out of the doldrums after their failure to qualify for this year's World Cup, the first time they will miss the tournament in 60 years. "It's a hard time and there's a lot to do", Mancini said at the national team's training center in Florence.

"It went the way we wanted, we are happy and Roberto is happy", Fabbricini told journalists. "I'm proud, for someone like me who came to Coverciano with the Under-14s in 1978, becoming Coach of the national team is one of the most handsome things that could happen".

Mancini's arrival as Italy boss has sparked rumours that Mario Balotelli will be recalled to the global scene after a fine season with Nice, scoring 26 times in 37 appearances.

"I hope to bring the national team back to high levels".

"It's important that the players who reach the national team do it with heart, because every young player dreams of reaching this squad", Mancini said.
