ONE of the slightly unfortunate ironies of Arsene Wenger's departure at Arsenal is that he is leaving just months after signing the goal-greedy striker the club has been missing for years.

Arteta's appointment would fit into that structure, with the former Arsenal captain making a big impression in his role on Pep Guardiola's coaching staff at Manchester City this season.

The 22-year-old has made a total of 26 appearances for Arsenal in the league this season and will now shift his focus to the Super Eagles at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

"Maybe it's better I go somewhere else". I think they'd be more solid and hard to beat [under Allegri]. "I want to wish this group of players well and the staff coming in, I will remain an Arsenal fan above everything else".
