Anthony Martial: Knee injury needs to be assessed

14 May 2018

Given the lack of anything to play for in this game, José Mourinho has taken the chance to give fringe players some minutes; Matteo Darmian, Scott McTominay, Daley Blind and Michael Carrick all start in what will be Carrick's last ever match as a player.

"On behalf of the players, all the staff, the manager and the coaching staff, we'd like to thank you for all your support again this year".

"If you said at this moment in time do you want to manage I'd probably say yes, I would yeah", Carrick said (via The Telegraph). It is an unbelievable opportunity for me.

"We were always favourites to go there and win and obviously, as the years have gone by, they have developed and spent more money and they've obviously improved an terrible lot".

"I would also like to thank Manchester United and all the clubs where I have had the privilege of working during this period".

He led his teammates out for the final time and put in an excellent performance, with a trademark pass contributing to Marcus Rashford's winning goal.

Yet there was no Anthony Martial in the squad, despite Mourinho's prior indication the Frenchman would start.

But Mourinho insisted his absence was purely down to an injury that could also see him miss next Saturday's showpiece.

Mourinho confirmed striker Romelu Lukaku would return to training on Tuesday following ankle trouble, good news for the cup final, but was less certain about Martial's situation. "He had treatment in the morning at the training ground and he stayed away". And everybody told me we would get that point.

'I'm waiting for the doctor but when it's impossible to play today, I have my doubts (for the Cup final)'.

Watford boss Javi Gracia only arrived in January but faces an uncertain future at a club who have become known for their hire-and-fire policy.

"Yes, I think so", was his brief assessment.
