The Met Office has forecast persistent and heavy snow becoming confined to parts of southwest England and the West Country later this afternoon and evening.

We don't expect the overall picture to change much, but you'll want to keep updated on the First Alert forecast as we're able to pin down more localized information.

"This was just a quick easterly blast, but the south-westerly warmer temperatures - or less cold temperatures - will start to kick in from Tuesday".

Legendary weatherman John Kettley says Mini Beast From The East is on its way out, but there's more snow to come.

Snow melt from Monday's sunny spells and overnight showers have increased the risk of ice on untreated surfaces. There could be a north-westerly wind that brings with it snow and sleet, it's not necessarily the Beast from the East this time but coming in from the west instead, from the Arctic and Greenland.

Some travel disruption is possible following snow and sub-zero temperatures over the weekend.

Widespread snow across the United Kingdom overnight has hit transport links, with police forces in the worst-hit regions urging people to avoid non-essential road travel.

Throughout Saturday, the wind begins to ease but as it does, the snow showers are likely to start banding together and become more prolonged.

A Sudden Stratospheric Warming of the atmosphere creates a sudden rise in temperature in the stratosphere which can sometimes lead to a bitterly cold winter. 'Some parts will stay below freezing all day... it is probably the coldest day of the lot, ' he said.

Temperatures will hover at around 0C and 1C for most of the country into this morning.

But he added that the cold snap will be short lived, with temperatures rising "fairly rapidly" from Tuesday.
