Women's basketball: Auriemma plans no big changes

14 March 2018

The UConn women's basketball team left the Final Four in Dallas last season without a national championship and without a winning streak but, players will tell you, with the perspective, motivation and preparedness that comes with a realization that championships aren't won simply because one is used to winning them.

UConn, which has been a No. 1 seed every year since 2007, opens up against 16-seed Saint Francis, Pa., on Saturday morning. The No. 1 seeds were fairly obvious beforehand and the committee didn't surprise us: UConn is the top overall seed, while Mississippi State, Louisville, and Notre Dame all command their own regions.

Marquette is 14-12 in 26 previous meetings with the Flyers and have claimed 12 of the last 14 matchups in the series. The program has never advanced past the second round. The national championship game is on April 1. Notre Dame has been a top seed the last seven years.

"So that would mean we're going to be a little bit different team", Auriemma said.

Junior Asia Durr was named ACC Player of the Year, marking the second time in the last three years that a Louisville player has earned the honor as senior Myisha Hines-Allen was named ACC Player of the Year following her sophomore campaign. "As the former Gonzaga coach, it was one of the highlights of my professional life, when we made it to Elite Eight". The Albany regional will likely be the most stacked of the bunch, and the fact that either SC or UConn will be out heading into the Final Four is an interesting wrinkle-and allows for better odds that a new team might take home the title this year. Following the Cardinals are three teams that have won the NCAA Tournament: No. 2 seed Baylor, No. 3 seed Tennessee and No. 4 seed Stanford, with Baylor and Tennessee each hoisting the trophy twice in the past 13 years.

CT is the top overall seed as it begins its quest to win a 12th national championship after recording its seventh undefeated regular season.

Barring one of the greatest upsets in the history of the sport, UConn will play the victor of that game Monday at Gampel.

Oklahoma got in with a 16-14 record - the fewest wins for an at-large team since 2005. The teams who just missed the tournament normally are still reeling from their near-miss that it takes them awhile to catch their bearings in the NIT.

The NCAA Tournament bracket was revealed Monday night and it was full of both the expected and the shocking.

Hampton responded on the other end, but the Irish then reeled off a 7-2 run fueled by Gibbs' second three-pointer of the game to take a 32-20 lead with 6:08 remaining in the first half.

Senior Saniya Chong, not Dangerfield, was on the court when Mississippi State's Morgan William hit the overtime game-winner in Dallas.
