Things We Want to See When Iris Suits up on 'The Flash'

14 March 2018

In a second appearance (detailed below), after she "paid it forward" by treating Cisco and Ralph to coffee, we realized that she writes using the same symbols that Barry scrawled upon emerging from the Speed Force prison. That's my motto, you know.

This article contains major spoilers for the latest episode of The Flash, "Run, Iris, Run", which as of publication has not yet aired on the west coast.

When Run, Iris, Run was announced, my reaction was more of an "of course" than an 'I can't wait.' Iris (and especially Candice Patton) has earned an episode like this, several times over.

Iris got to play the speedster hero in tonight's episode of The Flash, but while her time as Central City's hero was brief it wasn't just Barry Allen's speedster that returned by episode's end. For starters, the evolution of Harry that kicked off two weeks ago really gained steam here, and I love the obsessive drive that we're getting from him now.

It's tough for me to really process just how much story and character development they managed to pack into this one, even in something that could have been a gimmick episode with a villain of the week.

Portraying Iris as a superhero - albeit fleetingly - was something of a bucket list moment for Patton, but she's satisfied that it only lasted for an episode.

"I don't think anybody ever is going to guess exactly what it is", he added, referring to Mystery Girl's identity. And you know, it's more than just karma.

"I mean, there is no school for acting in front of a green screen, not that I'm aware of" she said.

"Iris" desire to put her powers to good use were an interesting contrast to Harry's overwhelming, obsessed drive to do it. "That's something I'll never have to do". Her transformation here was cathartic, and again, I can't help but feel it's the ultimate, final apology for the show's early "everybody lies to Iris' days".

Again, Helbing was mum, though he did share a curious clue about the costume Iris wears during her temporary turn as a speedster: its purple color was chosen for a reason, one that we will "find out soon". Yes, we need to see how Barry's dealing with the situation (and we do see a tease of that in the promo, below), but let's not have Iris giving him a pep talk. As she sees it, Iris' true heroism is what she can accomplish without superpowers. "It was great. I'm so grateful that I got to do that". There were plenty of things to remind us that yes, Iris has been the leader of this team for almost a year now. "I think that's the direction we're going to head back into". That leads to Barry being team leader while Iris is the speedster.
