South Korea's National Security Director Chung Eui-yong, right, and South Korean ambassador to China Noh Young-min meet with Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing Monday, March 12, 2018.

"We are looking forward to the smooth holding of the summit meeting between the two Koreas and the dialogue between North Korea and the USA and achieving concrete progress in promoting the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the normalization of relations between each other", Xi said.

He returned on Sunday from a visit to the United States, where an invitation was delivered to President Donald Trump from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for dialogue on the latter's nuclear program.

"North Korea mentioned an assurance of the regime's safety. and China needs the South Korean side to help clarify that so it knows what to do to meet those needs.as well as how North Korea plans to denuclearise", Cheng said.

"We will continue to realise the goal of denuclearisation, uphold the peaceful unification of the peninsula, and solve problems through dialogue and consultation", he said.

He said Japan, South Korea and the USA should discuss details of their strategy ahead of the planned talks between the US and North Korea "in order to make the dialogue a meaningful one".

Renmin University Korean affairs specialist Cheng Xiaohe said Chung's visit to Beijing could be "a very good opportunity" for Beijing to understand what Pyongyang needed for a commitment to abandon its weapons programme.

South Korean Spy Chief, Suh Hoon, was meanwhile to head to Tokyo to brief the Japanese government on the talks led by Chung in Pyongyang and Washington recently.

Xi did not say more about the North Korean nuclear crisis, but he said China's relations with South Korea have "maintained a good momentum of improvement".

By way of geography, its growing influence and established interest on the Korean Peninsula, China "was bound to play an important role in promoting denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in particular and shaping the geopolitical order in Northeast Asia in general", Cheng wrote.
