Church of Scientology to launch TV network

12 March 2018

The thought of a Scientology TV network has been in the works for some time now; the network was rumored about a year ago at first, and really seemed inevitable after the church launched its own studio with Scientology Media Productions.

The launch of Scientology TV comes at a contentious time following the high profile, 2015 documentary, Going Clear, and the A&E network series Scientology and the Aftermath, produced by actress and former church member Leah Remini.

The website scientology.tv says the Scientology Network will debut on at 8 p.m. eastern on Monday although it was not made clear what kind of programming the network will feature. "WELCOME to the SCIENTOLOGY NETWORK countdown to launch!" The two-minute video obliquely references Scientology's battered reputation after numerous exposes about the church's practices and tactics in dealing with those who leave their orbit. "The only thing more interesting than what you've heard", announces the video's coy on-screen graphic, "is what you haven't".

Arriving on March 12 is the plainly titled Scientology Network, earmarked for a home on DIRECTV, AppleTV, Roku, fireTV, Chromecast, iTunes and Google Play. A rep for DirecTV and others did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The app can be downloaded for free, which is the model typically pursued by TV programmers pursuing an ad-supported over-the-top (OTT) service, as opposed to a subscription version.

The grave concerns raised about Scientology's practices and the conduct of its leaders will also undoubtedly lead to pressure from activists on distributors who agree to carry Scientology Network.
