Brentwood High shines at indoor track and field state championships

10 March 2018

Will Williams' final hour, all-time personal best of 8.19m/26-10.5 to win the NCAA DI Indoor Championships long jump tonight was the stuff that dreams are made of.

"I'm very proud of our athletes and how they performed at the conference meet to earn these honors", Dudley said.

The broken record was courtesy of senior Paige Chapman.

Leon eventually crossed the finish line in a time of 4 minutes, 8.34 seconds, just under 4 seconds away from the first heat's fourth-place finisher Johan Koech of UTEP. The DMRs are coming off taking first place at ACCs on February 22, with the women running a school-record time and the men a season best. "Coach told me to adjust my mark and stay focused and stay composed and I just stayed composed back there". "This relay is special for me because the sprinters don't usually get to run with the distance guys, so to be able to run a relay with Dillon, Clay and Jordan is fantastic, especially all being seniors". This is what we build up to do.

Seymour revealed after the race that she had battled a hamstring injury coming into the NCAA Championships.

"The preparation for that race is always something that a lot of sprinters take very seriously", said Chapman.

Zallow ran a time of 7.72 seconds to finish behind Florida's Grant Holloway who ran a winning time of 7.58 seconds while Syracuse's Freddie Crittenden III finished second at 7.67 seconds.

All the practice and preparation paid off for Chapman.

"Super tough battle today", said Wyatt, a silver medalist in 2017 with a then school record of 18-2 ½. "I wasn't surprised quite frankly".

"We've worked a lot on technique, and built off of previous year", Boss said. "They really carried me down that runway for that last jump". "I think it's good for the sport of track and field and the Iowa track and field program".

There were highlights throughout the season, including an abundance of personal and school records. Lisa Fajardo has been a part of three of those performances. In the men's race, cross country champion Justyn Knight of Syracuse sprinted clear in the last 50 meters to win in 14:14.47.

Brenton Foster likewise has broken a record this season, and similarly to Fajardo, while he did not do so this time, he took home gold in the high jump. He looked great in here today. Martin also placed third in the long jump with a leap of 7.36m (24-1¾), totaling 16 points for the Texans at the meet. Coach Mecca felt Lofgren's presence helped Foster's performance.

"This is a blessing, I honestly did not really think I would be here", Devore said. "Even after completing the grueling hep, he is going to jump against the other 15 best high jumpers in the nation".

The Staples native is a four-time national qualifier in the long jump indoors for MSUM. "I'm getting stronger for different events, so now when I'm on the runway for the triple jump it's different".
