Anthony Davis Won't Play vs. Wizards After Ankle Injury Diagnosed as Sprain

10 March 2018

Otto Porter Jr. led six Washington players in double figures with 19 points and the Wizards cooled off the New Orleans Pelicans with a 116-97 victory Friday night at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. There's optimism that this will only cost Davis a game and that he'll be able to return on Sunday versus the Utah Jazz. Nikola Mirotic was the game's leading scorer with 26 points on 10-for-12 shooting.

Davis, whose X-Rays on the injury returned negative and a subsequent MRI on Thursday confirmed the extent of his injury as a sprain, injured his left ankle while battling for a rebound in Wednesday's 114-101 win at Sacramento.

During their winning streak, the Pelicans had averaged over 125 points per game. You're actually sitting at fourth place in the Western Conference standings right now it's looking forward to making the playoffs. "But that being said, we still have to play with a flow and understand the execution of what we have to do".

"It seemed like everything was real hard", Sacramento coach Dave Joerger said.

The Wizards' brilliant road form - Washington have been pretty good on the road all season, but recently they have stepped things up even further, winning seven of their last eight games outside of Washington.

"We can do that against teams like this", Davis said. Cheick Diallo added 14 points, 9 rebounds for the Pels, while DeAndre Liggins had a season-high 10 points.

New Orleans missed their first 11 3-pointers and by the time they raised their percentage above the 20 percent barrier, the Wizards' lead expanded to 25 points.

New Orleans ranks second in points in the paint per game (51.2) while Washington ranks 22nd (42.2). New Orleans was lights out from beyond the arc (11-26; 42.3 percent).

The Pelicans' first attempt Saturday (AEDT) at playing without both Cousins and Anthony Davis did not turn out quite as favorably. In these games they have scored 113.7 points per 100 possessions and conceded just 105.8 points, giving them an overall net rating of 8.0, 5.0 points better than their net rating over the course of the season. "We've done a good job with that". Washington outrebounded New Orleans 49-38, and converted 10 offensive rebounds into 18 second-chance points. Games including the Pelicans tend to finish over the total (62.5 percent).
