MI analyst Scott Turner leaving for NFL's Carolina Panthers

12 January 2018

On Wednesday night, ESPN's David Newton wrote that not only is Norv Turner joining the Carolina Panthers as its next offensive coordinator, but that his son, Scott, would be joining the Panthers as well as its QBs coach.

He will replace the recently fired Mike Shula in that role.

Carolina are the seventh team to hire Turner as head of their offense, the last being the Minnesota Vikings from 2014-16.

Turner's son, Scott, an analyst who worked with quarterbacks at MI, also is coming to Carolina as the next position coach for, according to another source.

The hiring of Turner is a change in schematics for head coach Ron Rivera.

It's now up to Turner to boost a Panthers offense that finished 19th in total yards in each of the last two years.

"I came to the conclusion going forward the thing we needed to do was bring in a different perspective, different ideas in terms of going forward to what I believe is our ultimate goal, and that is winning a Super Bowl, " Rivera said after firing Shula and Dorsey.

Turner, 65, never achieved prominent success in his three stints spanning three decades as head coach in the National Football League (114-122-1 career record with Washington, Oakland and San Diego). In the two years since his MVP campaign in 2015, Newton has thrown just 41 touchdowns while tossing 30 interceptions. The Seahawks missed the playoffs this year for the first time since the 2011 season.

Norv Turner is expected to make the Carolina Panthers his latest stop in the NFL. After short stops in Miami, Oakland and San Francisco, Turner replaced Marty Schottenheimer as head coach of the San Diego Chargers in 2007.
