First is the 18:9 aspect ratio, which gave us bigger screens by slimming down the bezels on smartphones, moving the position of the fingerprint scanner to rear and more. Leading with distinct innovative breakthroughs, the in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone offers its consumers an unprecedented mobile experience, defining a new era of mobile interaction.

"We are excited to announce Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors because they can be created to support sleeker, cutting-edge form factors, unique mobile authentication experiences, and enhanced security authentication", said Seshu Madhavapeddy, Qualcomm Technologies's vice president of product management. Vivo said that the demo smartphone that sports the new technology is ready for production but did not indicate a timeline on when the feature would be made available for public consumption.

The company had already announced a year ago it had developed the "in-display fingerprint scanning" technology for a prototype phone.

It's really nerdy stuff - all you really need to know is that phones with fingerprint sensors on the front are back again. For one, people screw up their screens all the time. This is then run through AI processor that is trained to recognize 300 different characteristics of your fingerprint digits.

I tried out the sensor on a generic Vivo phone and it worked surprisingly well. The fingerprint reader itself is about the size of a small coin and works by scanning your finger through the tiny gaps found along the phone's pixels.

The overall process takes just 0.7 seconds, not quite as fast as the 0.2 seconds that are commonly advertized for traditional fingerprint scanners these days, but still faster than the average of 1.4 seconds it takes to use face recognition. Pricing is another mystery at the moment though given that the technology has just started to debut in working prototypes, it is going to command a premium for a few years before it starts pilfering down the line to mid-range devices as well. Simply place your finger over the icon and press gently. You can find out more details about this new technology over at Vivo at the link below. That way, you'll be able to place your fingers anywhere to unlock the phone.

As smartphones go all-screen, one design problem has bedeviled everyone from Samsung to Apple: Where to put the fingerprint scanner?

The Face ID on the new iPhone X is good, but it does fail at times. Like right now, when it's freezing in NY and I usually have a scarf covering half my face, and Face ID won't work.
