It's really nerdy stuff - all you really need to know is that phones with fingerprint sensors on the front are back again. For one, people screw up their screens all the time. This is then run through AI processor that is trained to recognize 300 different characteristics of your fingerprint digits.
I tried out the sensor on a generic Vivo phone and it worked surprisingly well. The fingerprint reader itself is about the size of a small coin and works by scanning your finger through the tiny gaps found along the phone's pixels.
The overall process takes just 0.7 seconds, not quite as fast as the 0.2 seconds that are commonly advertized for traditional fingerprint scanners these days, but still faster than the average of 1.4 seconds it takes to use face recognition. Pricing is another mystery at the moment though given that the technology has just started to debut in working prototypes, it is going to command a premium for a few years before it starts pilfering down the line to mid-range devices as well.
