Ford Puts Auto Emergency Brakes On Two 2019 Models

11 January 2018

Performance upgrades like what the Edge ST will offer typically capture male buyers.

Connected up to the engine is a new eight-speed automatic transmission sending power to all four wheels. Other upgrades include an ST-tuned sport suspension and an available performance brake package.

Ford product planners sent the engineering wonks in Ford Performance a key to the Ford Edge, and they responded the only way they know how: with the brand new Ford Edge ST. "From a performance standpoint, and with its SUV silhouette and versatility, it sets a new standard Edge fans will love to drive". As you can probably tell, the Edge ST also stands out from the crowd thanks to an aggressive body kit, 21-inch wheels, and dual exhaust.

While the 2019 Ford Edge looks unmistakably Edge, the changes to the front-end styling are rather dramatic.

The 2019 Edge, which goes on sale this summer, will also offer new optional safety features, including a more sophisticated cruise control system as well as automatic steering assist to help avoid potential crashes.

That last system, also brand-new to Ford, is of particular interest; if the vehicle detects that it's coming up on an obstacle where an evasive steering maneuver is warranted, it will administer a warning, reduce steering effort in the appropriate direction, and automatically provide maximum yaw damping and stability control to support a quick, sudden evasive maneuver. Edge models will come standard with FordPass Connect, a WiFi hotspot that can connect up to 10 devices.

Expect to see the sharpened Edge on show in Detroit starting next week, in all specifications - including the new ST (pictured in blue) and the premium Titanium model (in deep red).

The 2019 Edge in the U.S. remains about the same mechanically in its base form, using the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which has received an additional 5 hp for a total of 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts). It's all mated to a new 8-speed transmission. Interior designers freed up space with a revised center console featuring a rotary gearshift dial, making room for an optional wireless charging pad.

With a wider grille and freshened fascia that create an athletic, modern appearance, the new Edge maintains the reputation for sophistication it's carried for more than a decade.

The usual facelift fodder applies, with the Edge getting a new front end with Ecosport-like grille and new LED headlights, and the back end loses its full-width light cluster which is replaced by new tail lights and a black glass panel in between.
