Overwatch League Inaugural Season Begins Today

Overwatch publisher Activision-Blizzard's in-house platform will show half of the regular-season contests, but the dominant share of the audience will come via Twitch, which will stream in Korean, English and French everywhere except China.

12 teams will square off over six-months to figure out which city's collected players deserve the title of best Overwatch team. Nevertheless, all the match-ups happening in North America, South Korea, and France will be broadcast throughout Twitch. The Atlantic Division teams take the stage at the Blizzard Arena Los Angeles on Thursday.

The first matchup is San Francisco Shock vs. Los Angeles Valiant. Blizzard players also will be given easy access to the Overwatch League's web presence via a new Overwatch League tab in the Blizzard Desktop App.

So fans of Blizzard's multiplayer hero-shooter will be able to follow every moment of the inaugural season of the game's professional league. An ESPN report cited a source as saying Overwatch had signed with another Chinese broadcaster, though the partner was not specified.

"We wanted to drive significant viewership of the Overwatch League in its inaugural season and beyond", said Armin Zerza, COO of Blizzard Entertainment.

The Overwatch League is the first major esports extravaganza to feature city-based teams, following a more traditional sports structure. Although details of "insider content", have been kept quite quiet for now, Twitch has said it will be looking to reward the biggest fans with certain items, cheering emotes and more.
