Go for more glory: Zidane to Real Madrid

18 December 2017

Barcelona will not give Real Madrid a guard of honour ahead of this Saturday's Clasico despite their rivals being crowned champions of the world.

Unbeaten in 16 league games this season, Barca hold a six-point advantage over second-placed Atletico Madrid. "But it does not depend on me, because I'm not the boss of the club. What depends on me is what I do on the pitch", said Ronaldo, when asked if he planned to retire at Madrid.

"He is in his club, in his house and what he has done, no one else is going to do it".

Ronaldo has smashed Real's club records since joining from Manchester United in 2009 and is way out in front as their all-time top scorer with 434 goals in 414 appearances.

"If possible, I would like to [retire at Madrid]", he said.

"For us it is fundamental Cristiano stays".

Barcelona have explained the reason behind it's decision not to mount a guard of honour for Club World Cup champions Real Madrid ahead of the El Clasico after Los Blancos' success in UAE last weekend.

"Zinedine Zidane is the best Coach, there's no doubt about that".

For long periods of this game in Abu Dhabi, it looked like Brazilian side Gremio would frustrate Real Madrid and perhaps even pinch a victory as the Spanish giants became increasingly frustrated in their attempts to break down a disciplined defence. We have great players and a raft of young talent coming through.

The day also had a pre-match ceremony to celebrate Cristiano Ronaldo's fifth Ballon d'Or award. The numbers speak for themselves.

"I am very happy, I remain very motivated to keep winning things at a collective and individual level".
